This past week I had the opportunity to meet Meg Whitman, who is running for governor for California. She’s a republican candidate, and while I have no allegiance to any political party, I think she has the right qualifications for the job. (California’s finances are a wreck, and it’s admittedly not a very friendly state for business owners with all its taxes and red tape.) I am still learning more about her and her stance on some issues, but it was exciting to meet this brave woman who was CEO of EBay for many years and a self-made billionaire.
If you are unfamiliar with Meg Whitman, here are some brief facts:
*Born in Long Island, Meg moved to California with her family at the age of 6
*Meg majored in economics at Princeton University then went on to get an MBA from Harvard Business School
*Companies where Meg has worked include Disney, Hasbro, FTD, Stride Rite and of course, eBay
*Meg has been married to her husband Griff for nearly 30 years and has two sons, Griff and Will
As CEO of eBay, Meg guided the company through the dot-com recession and grew its revenues from $4.7 million to nearly $8 billion – all while maintaining a healthy balance between work and family life. Meg is an inspiration to women entrepreneurs everywhere, and she could be just what the state of California needs to get back on track.
