Jessica Herrin on Glambition Radio with Ali BrownRemember back when the Avon lady knocked on your door, or your neighbor invited you to a Tupperware party? Well, Jessica Herrin has taken that old-school direct sales model, updated it for today’s woman, wooed over 30,000 gals from all over the world to work it, and has grown it into a $450 million+ company. (Yes, you read that right. In fact, some sources estimate it will hit a BILLION dollars in a few short years.)
As the founder and CEO of Stella & Dot, a “social selling” jewelry and accessories company, Jessica reinvented and redefined the merchandising industry in a way that helps women entrepreneurs balance life and work.

I had the pleasure of meeting Jessica in 2011 as part of the EY Winning Women Entrepreneur program, which we are both members of. I was blown away by her drive, her spirit, and also being able to rock this business to hundreds of millions while still being a great mom to two daughters, which I heard a lot about during our talks.
When Jessica first started selling jewelry out of her living room over a decade ago, everyone thought she was crazy! But then they remembered… this was Jessica. She was smart, driven, and passionate about this idea. And, she’d already proven herself once. At age 24, this gal co-founded the site that eventually became WeddingChannel.com. (I used that to plan my first wedding. Nice guy, but the wrong guy. It wasn’t Jessica’s fault. 😉 )
I asked Jessica to share her top 3 success tips on the show. Here they are, in her own words:
Tip #1: Less thinking, more doing
Jessica says, “Don’t over think it. Not because you shouldn’t be thoughtful, but you need to do less thinking, more doing. It’s the action that makes things happen. Always.”
Tip #2: Are you passionate enough?
Jessica says, “My commitment to our mission was so strong because it was an authentic passion. That’s something, I think, to be very clear for entrepreneurs. If you don’t care about your mission, you probably will quit because being an entrepreneur is really hard.”
Tip #3: Does it make you happy?
Jessica says, “Really making sure we’re listening to our own voice and not what society expects of us… or tells us… that we’re supposed to want to do. What’s going to make you happy? What authentically is going to make you bound out of bed in the morning?”
Jessica also revealed two big shifts going on in our lives right now that are revolutionizing the profitability of home-based businesses for women. (Hint: It’s the secret ingredient in her recipe for success—but you’ll have to listen to the interview for this hot tip!)
