Katrina Lake on Glambition Radio with Ali BrownImagine that you have a magic fashion fairy who sends you a mysterious box in the mail. You open it, and there are five items of clothing specifically chosen for you: your perfect cut, your favorite colors, your best styles, and it all fits like a charm. Well, your magic fashion fairy is here. It’s called Stitch Fix, and its creator is Katrina Lake. She’s reinventing the way we shop for fashion online, and tells her story on this episode of Glambition Radio.
I received my first Stitch Fix just a few weeks ago, and I tell you I was skeptical as I opened the box. But then, I realized they nailed my style! They honestly “got me” better than my gal at Nordstroms. And if I don’t want to keep anything I can just ship it back for free.
The tech part of this is fascinating… between the style profile that you fill out when you start, and which items you send back, Stitch Fix takes this data and feeds it into an increasingly fine-tuned algorithm, which means better pieces for you, and better purchase rates for Stitch Fix. It’s like the Netflix or Pandora of online shopping.
You definitely want to listen to this episode here!
While Katrina won’t talk numbers, her growth is tremendous. She shares that Stitch Fix has grown faster in a single year than Zappos.com and Diapers.com!
On this week’s Glambition Radio, I asked Katrina to share her top 3 success tips. Here’s a sneak preview of one of them, which I have heard from more than one of our Glambition guests:
Tip #3: Don’t be afraid of being naïve
“We definitely benefited a lot from just being naïve about how things are traditionally done in the industry. We brought fresh eyes to it and did things a new way. I think just being unafraid of the things you don’t know, and the naïveté that you have—and being able to take advantage of it—was something that we really benefited from.”
Katrina also filled me in on her upcoming wedding, and how her fiancé helped her get Stitch Fix up and running. Great stuff. A true Glambition Gal!
