What is a brand? A great logo? The look-and-feel of your website?
Those things are important, but wait until you hear what branding expert Laura Ries has to say about it.
She is the co-founder of the consulting firm Ries & Ries with her father, Al Ries. I first discovered her dad’s classic book, The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing, about 15 years ago, and it really shifted how I looked at marketing and branding.
Laura and her dad have consulted with many Fortune 500 companies across the world, including Microsoft, Ford, Disney, and Frito-Lay. They’ve written six books together, and Laura is also a frequent guest on major news programs.
A brand has value. It’s what you stand for. And Laura says once you get clear on that, and really narrow the focus, you will start to attract clients and customers.
This week’s Glambition Radio episode is loaded with valuable tips on branding, positioning, and marketing. Here’s a sneak preview for you from Laura, in her own words:
Tip #1: Focus is a key concept
“You need to narrow your focus, because that’s what builds a brand. If you’re a small business starting out, the first thing you have to think of is not how many things you can do, but what’s the one thing you can do really well that your competitor isn’t doing.”
Tip #2: Get third-party endorsements
“If you’re building a business, don’t just talk about how great you are. You need someone else to do that… getting third-party endorsements, getting it out on social media. You need people tweeting about you!”
Tip #3: Be newsworthy
“When you have news value, you can get PR. When you stand for something, when you can create some news value around you and what you do, that has tremendous power.”
Laura and I also had fun talking about the recent Vogue magazine cover featuring Kim Kardashian and Kanye West…. Good or bad move?
