When Fran Hauser was at People magazine nine years ago, she noticed a common question from the women she was mentoring: ‘How can you be so NICE and still be so successful?’ As women know all too well, the balance between being nice and being assertive is like walking a tightrope. The issue came up yet again when she wrote an article for Forbes called “Nice Girls Finish First” and surprise, surprise, the article resonated with women from around the world.

Realizing the issue extended beyond her own network, Fran wrote her just-released “The Myth of the Nice Girl”. And we are so glad that she did. On Glambition Radio, she discusses how the book’s topic came at just the right time, considering the current cultural climate we are in, and how you can be both nice and not compromise your work.

Fran has previously held senior positions at some of the world’s largest digital media businesses, such as Time Inc., People, InStyle, AOL, Moviefone, and Entertainment Weekly. Today, she is an angel investor largely investing in female founders and has been featured in Vogue.com, Ad Age, CNBC, just to name a few.

On the show, we also discuss:

*How it’s possible to be a strong leader while also being a caring one — you don’t have to choose.

*What Fran did to professionally handle a workplace situation when a senior male executive made an inappropriate comment in a group meeting (listen and learn from this!)

*How she got started investing in consumer-focused companies and what she looks

for in a company before she invests (great advice)

*Why you should sometimes give people the benefit of the doubt… even in tricky situations

*How Fran harnessed the power of vulnerability to write her new book

*How she used humor to effectively assert her needs at a job early on in her career (more great learning points!)

*Why Fran turned DOWN a high-paying corner office job a few years ago, after doing some soul-searching (I love this story)

On this episode of #GlambitionRadio, Fran and I also discuss why being nice and being strong are not mutually exclusive, why it’s important to bring your whole self to work, and the ultimate form of empathy.

You really don’t want to miss this one. Listen to this episode of Glambition Radio now (or download it for later). And don’t forget to pick up a copy of “The Myth of the Nice Girl”!
