Kate White, Best-Selling Author + Former Editor-in-Chief of ‘Cosmopolitan’ — Glambition Radio Episode 144 with Ali Brown

She spent 14 years as the editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan magazine, where she increased overall circulation by 30%, making Cosmo the #1 magazine in the U.S during that time. But I’m having Kate back on the show because her career books have changed my life since I began reading them in the mid-90s. And you’ll hear all about her latest ‘Gutsy Girl Handbook’, on Glambition Radio. During our conversation, she dives into why NOW was the right time to release this book, and I couldn’t agree more.

I’m in NYC…

I’m writing this from the lobby of our chic NYC hotel, sipping an iced cold-brew coffee and getting ready for a VIP Strategy Day with a new client. Brett and I have been enjoying a week sans kids and taking in all the city has to offer!

On Wednesday night I hosted a small soiree for several of my #GlambitionRadio guests and it was wonderful to catch up with these high profile women personally. Guests included Kate White (former editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan), Farnoosh Torabi (host of So Money), retail maven Lisa Robinson (formerly of QVC), and several others you may know.

Randi Zuckerberg, Founder of Zuckerberg Media + Author of ‘Pick Three’ — Glambition Radio Episode 143 with Ali Brown

Since leaving Facebook in 2011, Randi Zuckerberg has piled up a varied stack of her own accomplishments, including a weekly tech radio show, two TV shows, a series of angel investments, producing three Broadway shows, and even a six-week stint starring Rock of Ages. It’s been a wild ride since she decided to embrace her creative personality and take a different road than her family name would seem to dictate.

But she fast learned that entrepreneurship combined with motherhood came with incredible demands of time and bandwidth. How to manage?

It’s exhausting to market “harder”…

When competition swarms around, it can be good in many ways, as it gets you to raise your game.

But inadvertently, it can keep you playing small … because then often your entire focus becomes marketing.

And that’s exhausting.

Why?

Because someone else will always have…

Cooler videos.
A larger following.
Greater exposure.
More cash to market.
Better ads.
More posts.
A larger team.
Lower prices.
More famous friends.

The list goes on.

Fran Hauser on Glambition Radio with Ali Brown

Fran Hauser, Author of “The Myth of the Nice Girl” — Glambition Radio Episode 142 with Ali Brown

When Fran Hauser was at People magazine nine years ago, she noticed a common question from the women she was mentoring: ‘How can you be so NICE and still be so successful?’ As women know all too well, the balance between being nice and being assertive is like walking a tightrope. The issue came up yet again when she wrote an article for Forbes called “Nice Girls Finish First” and surprise, surprise, the article resonated with women from around the world.

Realizing the issue extended beyond her own network, Fran wrote her just-released “The Myth of the Nice Girl”.

Shelley Zalis on Glambition Radio with Ali Brown

Shelley Zalis, Founder + CEO of The Female Quotient and The Girls’ Lounge — Glambition Radio Episode 141 with Ali Brown

In the middle of the World Economic Forum at Davos, you may come across an intimate oasis of women who are connecting, doing deals, having a great time, and enjoying a bit of respite from the huge majority of men wandering the town in gray suits. And you’ll see The Girls’ Lounge founder Shelley Zalis enjoying every minute of it.

She got the idea for the Girls’ Lounge in 2013 while walking the floor of the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas. Women were the vast minority there, and she saw them craving a “safe” space to relax from the overly male vibe.

Fresh Strategy Secrets on Glambition Radio with Ali Brown

‘Creative Strategy Secrets’ — Glambition Radio Episode 140 with Ali Brown

Let me walk you through highlights of the powerful content I shared at my recent Creative Strategy Workshop here in Phoenix.

For years—in both school and organizations we’ve worked in—we’ve been programmed to always have the right answer, instead of asking the right questions. But it’s the right questions that lead to better answers. And lead to brilliant business moves. This solo episode of #GlambitionRadio features highlights from my recent immersion on this topic—to help you begin to regain this lost art

It’s increasingly important to be thinking differently than everyone else in your industry, to stay ahead of the curve, keep your competition at bay, and even better… be continually positioned in your own unique category.

Paige Adams-Geller on Glambition Radio with Ali Brown

Paige Adams-Geller, Founder + Creative Director of PAIGE Denim— Glambition Radio Episode 139 with Ali Brown

Remember when—after years of ill-fitting, stiff jeans—it all changed in 2005? Suddenly the cuts were fantastic, the fabric was like a soft hug that moved with you, and we were all now happily paying well over $100 a pair. We have the founder of PAIGE Denim to thank. Not only was she the first female founder in the industry, but Paige Adams-Geller changed the way we wear jeans. And today, I have her walk us through exactly how she did it on this episode of Glambition Radio.

After years of starving herself to make it on camera as a model and actress, Paige sought treatment for an eating disorder.
